![]() ![]() The central question for this research is about establishing the degree in which the curriculum of Roman Catholic education during the period mentioned above, facilitated this process of Surinamization within a colonialist framework, and to assess the pedagogical underpinnings hereof. Notwithstanding the colonial framework in which Catholic education occurred, a process of Surinamization preceded Suriname’s independence. As an actor in the educational field, the Church also co-contributed to Suriname’s independence, through her curriculum offered to the Surinamese youth in her schools. However, it did operate for almost 200 years within a framework of colonialism, since Suriname only received its independence from the Netherlands in 1975. ![]() From its inception the Roman Catholic Church took her responsibility to educate the Surinamese youth seriously. ![]() The Roman Catholic mission established herself permanently in Suriname in 1785. ![]()
